HIGH-PERFORMANCE TRAINING

Looking for Advanced Summer Training?

Already playing competitive volleyball? Take your game to the next level with our Elite Summer Training program, designed for club athletes preparing for the upcoming indoor season.

Indoor Tryouts

Join Ottawa Fusion COMPETE.

Indoor tryouts are the first step to joining an Ottawa Fusion competitive team. Athletes participate in a comprehensive evaluation process designed to identify the team that best supports their long-term development.

Tryouts take place each September/October and follow the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) Tryout Policy.

The Tryout Process

  • 2–3 on-court evaluation sessions (90–120 minutes each)
  • 1 fitness evaluation (60 minutes)

On-court sessions include individual skill drills, team drills, and game play. The fitness evaluation is completed by Ottawa Fusion's strength and conditioning partner.

What We Evaluate

  • Volleyball skills
  • Athletic ability
  • Coachability
  • Effort and work ethic
  • Team play
  • Overall athletic potential

Both the on-court evaluations and fitness assessment are considered during team selection.

Team Selection

Ottawa Fusion's goal is to place each athlete on the team that best supports their long-term development.

Mention that athletes should attend tryouts for their OVA age category, but coaches may recommend a different age division based on technical skills, physical abilities, and overall readiness.

Registration

Registration is required before attending tryouts. After registering, athletes receive additional information about tryout schedule, fitness testing, and OVA registration requirements.

All tryout sessions and fitness testing are considered mandatory. If an athlete cannot attend due to illness or injury, the Club Head Coach should be notified as soon as possible.

Beach Tryouts

Join Ottawa Fusion COMPETE Beach.

Beach tryouts are the first step to joining Ottawa Fusion COMPETE Beach. Athletes participate in a focused on-sand evaluation designed to place them in the training environment that best supports their long-term development.

Tryouts take place each May ahead of the summer beach season.

The Tryout Process

  • Individual skill drills (serving, passing, attacking, defending)
  • Partner drills focused on communication and teamwork
  • Small-sided gameplay and competitive situations
  • Evaluation of how athletes adapt to beach-specific movement and conditions

The on-sand evaluation provides a comprehensive assessment of an athlete's ability to compete in the unique beach volleyball environment.

What We Evaluate

  • Technical beach volleyball skills
  • Athletic ability and movement in the sand
  • Ball control and decision-making
  • Communication with a partner
  • Coachability and responsiveness to feedback
  • Overall potential to compete on the OVA Beach Tour

Our scouts and coaches observe every aspect of an athlete's performance throughout the tryout process.

Team Selection

Ottawa Fusion’s goal is to place each athlete in the training group and competitive environment that best supports their development.

Athletes are prepared to compete in OVA Beach Tour events throughout the summer, with training focused on both individual and team performance.

Registration

Registration is required prior to attending beach tryouts. After registering, athletes receive additional details about:

  • Tryout schedule and location
  • What to bring (water, sunscreen, appropriate beach gear)
  • Any OVA or club requirements for participation

All scheduled tryout sessions are considered important for a full evaluation. If an athlete cannot attend due to illness or injury, the Club Head Coach should be notified as soon as possible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who should attend tryouts?

Tryouts are for athletes ready to transition from our Develop programs to a more intensive environment. We look for players with basic technical proficiency who are eager to train and compete in a high-performance setting.

Does my athlete need previous club experience?

While previous experience is helpful, it is not always a requirement. Many of our competitive athletes move up directly from our Development tracks once they have mastered the fundamentals and are ready for the next level.

What is the commitment level?

Compete programs require a higher level of dedication. Athletes are expected to attend weekly structured training sessions and participate in tournament competitions throughout the season.

Can athletes play indoor and beach?

Absolutely. We encourage multi-seasonal development. Our pathway allows athletes to transition from indoor competitive seasons in the fall/winter to beach training and summer competition.
