April 23-25, Waterloo Ontario
Following an exciting season, the 15U Girls Red team entered the OVA provincial championships in Division 1. Despite injuries and illness, the girls showed tremendous spirit and teamwork as they played through the three day tournament. Thanks to the combined efforts of head coach Irena Zamboni, and assistant coach Linden Leung our team has experienced a year of significant growth. As if two coaches of such calibre were not enough, the team was further gifted with the arrival of assistant coach Chelsea Schmalz a little later in the season.
The OVA provincial tournament saw many moments of absolute brilliance. Division 1 saw the Fusion Red pitted against many of western and central Ontario’s higher competitive teams. Regardless of the growth which was demonstrated over the course of the season, our girls continued to show visible growth during the provincial tournament itself. Significant progress could be seen in absolutely all areas including serves, serve receives, blocking, digging and hitting to name but a few.
It should also be noted that the parents of our Fusion Red girls have also demonstrated significant growth over the course of the season. Despite many games which went to a third set, and countless lengthy volleys, our 15U parents managed to get by without the use of defibrillators. In his excitement, however, one parent walked directly into the path of a steel door resulting in his elimination from the first set of one match. A special note of thanks goes to our team manager, Kathleen, who did an exceptional job of keeping players and parents on track at all times. Kathleen also demonstrated nerves of steel as she diligently occupied the role of scorekeeper during our games.
All round, the provincials were an exciting time for the girls 15U Fusion Red, their coaches and parents. Stay tuned for our next update as we travel to the nationals in Sherbrooke, Quebec from May 7-9, 2010.
