14U Girls Show They're Champions (PHOTOS)
By: Rebekah Aaron

The weekend of February 20-21 Fusion girls went into their 4th tournament of the season but our first tournament in Championship Division.  It started out with a drive down to Peterborough on Friday February 19th.  We got to the hotel, Best Western, got settled in and went out for dinner.  We had a little swim after dinner and a meeting with Coach Louis.  After the meeting, all the girls went to their rooms and into bed.  Parents had to knock on player’s rooms a couple of times after curfew to tell us to stop all the talking and go to bed.

We woke up at around 6:30 the next morning to get started.

Our first game was at 9:00.  It was against Durham Attack, a very strong team that we had played before and had lost to. We knew what we were up against.  After an intense first game we lost 14-25.  The second game, Fusion came out on top winning 25-23 making it a split.  It was very good and also very intense.  After finding a quiet  spot we had a little chat with Louis.  He was happy and very impressed with our performance.

We had a game off then it was onto the court again.  We played DRVC (Durham Regional Volleyball Club) another very strong team that we had also played before.  The first game we lost 22-25.  It was a very close one with few mistakes.  The second game we came across a very tough server who we had met before and had not been able to defeat.  This server got many points on us but we were able to fight back.  Sadly our hard work was not enough to win us the set and we lost 12-25.  Louis did not care about the outcome, he was very happy with our performance.

It was now time for playoffs.  The team changed from their purple jerseys to their red jerseys and went onto the court to play a team called Storm.  This was the match where not getting enough sleep really affected our play.  We made many simple mistakes losing the first game 17-25.  The next game was very hard and very intense.  We worked hard but it was not enough - we lost 20-25.  The team was very sad.  We all sat down in a quiet corner to have a little talk with Louis about that game.

We had one more match left to determine whether we would stay in Championship Division, or go back down to Trillium.  We were going to play EtobicokeTitans.  Everyone was very excited and very awake for this match.  The first game was an easy win.  Fusion won 25-14.  The second game was a bit more tough and we were not able to win, losing 19-25.  It went to a third game, very suspenseful.  After 8 points we switched sides.  Thara was up to serve.  She had some amazing serves.  It was 14-9 for us.  Thara served the ball, and the other team returned it with a bit of difficulty.  We passed the ball up to the setter, the setter set it outside to power and a very good hit from Lindsay won us the game, 15-9.  Very good job girls!

We went from being ranked 11th to being ranked 9th!!  It was enough to keep us in the championship division.  A very good tournament girls!!!!  On the way home we all stopped in Perth to celebrate our tournament with pizza!  Also very fun.  We all got to hang out with our team mates. All in all it was a VERY good day!
