15U Purple

15U Girls Challenge Cup – February 13, 2010

Though early and still dark, it was clear sailing to Kingston as Purple looked to their third OVA tournament of the season.  The team welcomed Thara and Caroline, call-ups from 14U, who were great contributors to the day.  As injuries continued to affect the bench, the return of Emily and Amanda to the active list later this month is eagerly anticipated by all.

The Clarington Grizzlies and the Peterborough Thunder were wake-up calls #1 and# 2 of the day.  Sets of 14-23, 12-25, 11-25, and 10-25 resulted in a degree of frustration for Purple, but they shook it off and maintained a spring in their step.  Next up were the 14U Mavericks, and consistency and determination brought Purple back from several deficits to finish close, 23-25 in both sets.  Strong service by Jordan and Thara were highlights of the second set as the girls started to find their mojo.

The 15U Mavericks brought their game and eventually saw wins of 22-25 and 20-25, scores that belied an effort by Purple that lead to mid-set scores of 14-14 and 17-17.  Kingston’s Pegasus Rip Tides were our fifth challenge of the tournament, and though the results were disappointing once again (16-25 and 21-26), the girls showed great character by playing hard and supporting each other.  A dramatic sideline tumble by Thara and Emika added excitement, though thankfully no injuries, to the last set of the day.

As teachable moments go, the Challenge Cup was a significant one for the team.  The girls continue to find their way, and, along with coaches Deb and Dougal and a great group of parents, Purple understands that the score of a game is not the sole indicator of success.

GO PURPLE!
