14U Girls Fight for Silver (PHOTOS)
By: Lindsay Dohar #6

The weekend of January 30th - 31st, the Fusion 14U girls were in Scarborough for their 3rd tournament of the season. Before the girls knew it, the whistle blew for their first match of the morning against Storm Tornadoes. Both teams came ready to play and gave it their all to make a good first impression. At the end of the match, Fusion came out ahead with the scores; 25-13, 25-14 and 25-14. Pretty good for their first game of the day.

Smiles were all around after the girls' first win. Shortly after, they were back out on the court for warm up to play their second match of the day against Etobicoke Wildcats. The girls received their first defeat, but after a motivational speech from Coach Louis, the girls went back out there and claimed victory in the next two games. Everyone was proud of the girls' come back and the final scores were; 22-25, 25-20 and 25-8. GOOD JOB GIRLS!

The girls had a two game break but already started focusing on how they could improve for their first match of the playoffs, the quarter-finals. They soon found out who their match would be against and wasted no time getting their preparation for the game underway. Both teams had their strengths and weaknesses but the Fusion girls played with their strengths and won; 25-20 and 25-13 and earned a spot in the semi-finals.

There was absolutely no time for a break, and the girls quickly were back on the court to play for their spot in the finals. DRVC and Fusion met up at the court and no one hesitated to get started. Both teams were evenly matched and it was a nail biter. The first game was a fight for who had the most heart to win. With a speech from the coaches and the encouragement from the parents they made it through to claim victory with a score of 28-26. The girls fought again and were able to move on to the finals with a win of 25-13.

Fusion and their opponent, Scarborough Titans Synergy faced each other for the final match of the day. The Titans had really nice serves and hits and Fusion had a tough time getting under them and making their own play of attack. After a talk with the coaches and the whole team encouraging one another, the team kept strong. Although Fusion came up short - 8-25 and 7-25 -  winning silver was definitely an accomplishment for the girls and our best outcome of a tournament so far.

After the congratulations from the coaches and parents, the girls walked away with their heads held high, proud of the final finish of the day. After handing out the medals, the team had an around the table discussion over cake celebrating Caroline’s, Adara’s, Holly’s and Lindsay’s birthdays! YUM!

      AMAZING PERFORMANCE GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
